Mayan, Brazilian, or Rope? A Field Guide to Hammock Styles

Three hammock styles side by side on a wooden deck

Three hammocks can look identical in a photo and feel completely different the second you lie down. The weave is destiny. Here's the honest field guide to the three great hammock traditions we sell, and who each one is really for.

Mayan: the woven net

The Mayan hammock is a hand-loomed net of thousands of interlocking loops — no knots, no bars, nothing between you and the weave. It stretches to match your body, breathes in hot weather, and packs down astonishingly small. Because there's no spreader bar, it wraps you in a gentle cocoon, which is why generations in the Yucatán sleep in them nightly. The learning curve is real for the first ten minutes — get in diagonally, lie across the weave rather than along it, and it flattens out like a bed. Start with The Matrimonial for two, or the Mayan Single if the hammock is your solo territory.

Brazilian: the fabric bed

Brazilian hammocks are woven as a solid fabric bed, often with hand-crocheted edges and a denser, blanket-like feel. They block the breeze a little more — a feature on the coast in October — and feel instantly familiar to anyone who likes a mattress more than a net. The drape is closer to a cocoon than the Mayan, and the fabric makes them a friendly first hammock: no diagonal technique required. Our Brazilian Cotton Double is the one we'd hand a first-timer.

Rope: the classic spreader-bar

The rope hammock is the North American icon: cotton or polyester rope woven through hardwood spreader bars that hold the bed flat and open. It's the poolside, lemonade, watch-the-clouds hammock — easy in, easy out, nothing to learn, and the flat lay makes it the social hammock: you can see and be seen. The trade-offs are honest ones: rope can leave a waffle pattern on bare skin, and it doesn't pack for travel. For a permanent spot on a deck or between two posts, our Classic Rope Hammock is hard to beat.
